D.C. library system needs reality check

D.C. library system needs reality check

Current readers might well be confused by conflicting reports about the new Shaw library in the Sept. 10 issue.

On page three, The Current reported on the Shaw neighborhood’s unhappiness with processes for public input to plans for a new Watha T. Daniel/Shaw Neighborhood Library. On page 14, a letter from library chief Ginnie Cooper appeared, thanking the community for helping shape the future of their library.

It would be great if Cooper appreciated what members of the public had to say or if she answered their questions but, in fact, her letter indicates a new level of cynicism. The D.C. Public Library has gone beyond obfuscation, stonewalling and unresponsiveness to creating an alternate reality.
