THE BROOKLYN PUBLIC Library's embattled executive director is about to step down from her high-paying gig, the Daily News has learned.

Ginnie Cooper's departure - 18 months before her $200,000-a-year, five-year contract was up - comes after several high-profile gaffes, including the controversial closure of a Brownsville library branch in March after a staffer was injured by rowdy teen girls.

Cooper has accepted a position at a "major metropolitan library," according to an e-mail sent yesterday to library trustees from board President Thomas Amon.

"I'm sure there won't be a whole lot of tears in Brownsville over her departure," said Councilman Charles Barron (D-East New York).

Brooklyn Public Library officials declined to comment.

In November, the Daily News reported Cooper was forced to return $27,000 in pay after auditors found she had taken more than six weeks of vacation not allowed in her contract.
