JULY 25, 2008 -- LOWER LEVEL

SEPT 16, 2008 -- LOWER LEVEL

Please excuse the pixelation. This September image of the Lower Level has been edited by the Library Dynamos so that it can actually be somewhat legible. Unfortunately, DC Public Library staff have uploaded images that aren't nearly as clear as the ones shown on the website back in July.

Some initial notes on the changes:

  • The areas shaded gray we assume are mechanical spaces... it seems to have significantly increased in size for no apparent reason?
  • The Staff Area, shown in light green, is still almost half the size of the large Meeting Room. The Meeting Room is supposed to fit 100 people. That means the Staff Area can fit 50 people. Is that much space for the staff really necessary considering the needs of the community (adult literacy lab, seniors resource area, media room, etc. -- see surveys).
  • The Men's Room seems to only have one toilet and one urinal.
  • Has the Conference Room shrunk in size from the one depicted in July?
  • One of the light green rooms is now marked as Friends Room for the local friends group. It looks as if it could fit three people.
  • There is an gray area marked as Vending to represent where where Chief Cooper's coffee cart could go.
  • The "I" marks seem to indicate support beams? If this is the case, there is a beam right in the middle of the large Meeting Room and in the Display Area.
  • At the 6/23/08 design meeting, there was expressed discussion about natural light coming down into the lower level thanks to raising the basement up because of a previously unknown well water situation under the library. However, according to the architect at the 9/4/08 meeting, the only light coming in will somehow have to travel down the stair case. Was the raising of the library just conjecture and why?
  • There is a random work room in light green almost half the size of the conference room. It is not labeled. Is this a community space? Can it be absorbed into the Conference Room to make that bigger?

The quality of the September images are poor. We are not sure why the September floor plans aren't as clear as the ones from July. For the unedited September floor plans, please go directly to the DCPL website and click on the images there.
