COUNCILMEMBER CHEH CANCELS TENLEY/JANNEY roundtable AND reaffirms OPPOSITION TO LCOR PROPOSAL

CHEH CALLS ON MAYOR FENTY TO BEGIN CONsTRUCTION OF LIBRARY IMMEDIATELY, PPP is "dead"

(Washington DC) Councilmembers Mary M. Cheh and Kwame Brown sent a letter to Mayor Adrian Fenty indicating their opposition to the LCOR public private partnership for the Tenley/Janney site and their desire for construction of the library to begin immediately.

Invitations to attend a March 16th roundtable to consider details of the Tenley/Janney site were sent to the Deputy Mayor of Economic Development, LCOR and the D.C. Public Schools. The objective was to gather information about the
details of the most recent proposal in order to inform the public and the Council. However, because the principals declined the invitations, the hearing has been canceled.

"We genuinely regret this turn of events; the public interest could have been well served by a sound, well-considered, and community-supported public private partnership," Cheh and Brown write in the letter

"We are disappointed that we cannot support the public private partnership for the Tenley/Janney site," Cheh said. "Now, the best we can do is rebuild the Tenleytown Library as quickly as possible and include structural supports to
permit building on top of the library at some later date."
